All About Anxious Feelings

We’ve all felt that occasional anxious feelings in our life. The feeling of being nervous, restless or tense.  The feeling of impending stress or panic in certain situations.  We may suddenly have an increased heart rate and rapid breathing, along with tightness in our chest.  Yes, that’s anxiousness. It comes in different ways, and at different times.  We may be anxious over starting that new job, buying that new house, having that new baby, meeting with that old friend, our financial situation, or even something as simple as going to do the grocery shopping. This occasional anxious feeling is perfectly normal.  This occasional anxiousness passes quickly.  These occasional anxious feelings are nothing that controls your life or consumes your thoughts.  This anxiousness is nothing to be worried about.  However, when you begin to feel like you're worrying too much and it's interfering with your work, relationships or other parts of your life, that’s when anxiousness may be an ongoing issue.

If your fear, worry or anxious feels are upsetting to you and difficult to control, then you may have an anxious feeling disorder. When you begin to feel depressed, or start to have trouble with alcohol or drug use, or have other mental health concerns along with anxiousness, it may be time for you to take a look at whether your anxiousness is normal, or a concern.  If your worries do not go away on their own, then they may get worse over time if you don't act quickly. For some people, anxious feeling disorders will have intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Anxious feelings regularly involve recurring episodes of sudden feelings of extreme anxiousness, fear or stress, that can reach out of control within minutes, and become an anxiousness panic attack.

A panic attack may include the following symptoms

  • Increased heart rate
  • Rapid breathing or hyperventilation
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feeling suddenly weak or tired
  • Inability to concentrate, or to think about anything other than the present worry

These feelings of anxiousness  can, and may, interfere with your daily routine. They may feel difficult to control, and are often out of proportion to the actual situation. You may suddenly start to avoid places or situations to prevent these feelings. Symptoms may start during childhood or the teen years and may continue into adulthood, or they may not start until later in adulthood.

Chronic worrying anxiousness can cause a multitude of physical and mental health problems. These problems occur when fight or flight is triggered daily by excessive worrying and anxiousness. This stress response causes the body’s nervous system to release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones can increase blood sugar levels and triglycerides, which are used by the body for fuel. High levels of adrenaline and cortisol, have been shown to be toxic to cells of the brain and immune system. These hormones also cause physical effects such as:

  • Difficulty swallowing due to the tightening of the throat
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Rapid and erratic heartbeat
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Irritability and mood change
  • Muscle tension and aches
  • Nausea, diarrhea or vomiting
  • Nervous energy
  • Rapid breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Excessive sweating
  • Anxious trembling and twitching

Once you begin to experience these anxiousness disorder symptoms, you will likely go to see your doctor.  Your doctor may send you to see a Psychiatrist or Psychologist to diagnose your anxiousness disorder. These doctors write prescriptions specifically for anxiousness, known as anti-anxiousness medications, and they are some of the most commonly prescribed drugs.

But these prescription medications don’t always work, and can’t be used by everyone, and have many unwanted side effects (including being highly addictive).  For these reasons, many people begin to look for natural remedies to control their anxious feelings instead of prescription medications. Many natural remedies have long histories of safe and effective use, especially essential oils.
