Cooking with Essential Oils

Looking to cook with essential oils?  Whether you are new to essential oils, or a seasoned user, cooking with oils is a great way to use your essential oils.

While many of you may believe that using essential oils in cooking is a fairly new idea; it really isn't.  In fact most of our food products today use essential oils for aroma and flavor such as juices, lemonade, chewing gum, chocolates, candies, and much more.

The main difference between those oils used for flavoring food and essential oils such as doTERRA essential oils, is that most of those oils, if not all of them, are synthetic and processed oils, and dōTERRA essential oils are superior in quality.  For those of you that don't know about the difference in food grade oils and Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils, this basically means when you use doTERRA oils, you will be getting the healthful benefits of the plant, and not just the synthetic ‘flavor.’

While not all of doTERRA essential oils are made for ingestion, or could be harmful if taken in high dosages, most of the doTERRA essential oils are not only safe in moderate use for ingestion, or as flavoring, but they are also delicious, and packed full of health benefits!

 

Using Essential Oils in Cooking

Food grade essential oils have been deemed "safe for consumption" over the years, however, in todays food industry, there are so many unknowns as to what is actually safe for us, and what is actually full of unknown chemicals, endocrine and hormone disruptors too. So, if you are looking to enhance the flavor of your food, without worrying that you are using dried herbs that have been coated in pesticides, herbicides or chemical laden fertilizers, then you should be using a drop or two of doTERRA essential oils, in your dish!  doTERRA essential oils can be used in cooking and in beverages too, for enhancing flavor and providing a boost to your health. All of dōTERRA’s essential oils are high quality and those essential oils which come from edible plants (such as lemon, basil, thyme, oregano, marjoram, wild orange, etc.) are completely safe to use internally. 

The easiest way to begin cooking with essential oils is to substitute the essential oils in recipes that call for dried herbs, spices or fruit juices. Simply replace those ingredients with the essential oil.

At first glance, using dōTERRA’s Essential Oils in cooking may seem difficult, but actually it is very easy once you learn the basics of the oils. The most important thing you need to remember is that doTERRA oils are undiluted, pure essential oils, which means they are extremely potent, and much more potent than any other ingredient you use in the kitchen. And particularly more potent than any other brand of essential oil you will use.  For example, 1/2 a drop or one drop of doTERRA oil may be enough to adequately flavor a large pot or bowl of your favorite spaghetti or lasagna recipe.

With so many options for spices, seasonings, and extracts on the market that can help enhance our food, you might be wondering, “Why should I cook with essential oils?” While cooking methods often depend on diet and personal preferences, there are several benefits to using essential oils in cooking. Not only will essential oils provide any meal with powerful flavor, but they also allow the user to enjoy any internal health benefits that the essential oil may hold, as well as providing a safe, natural way to flavor your food and offering convenience when fresh ingredients are not available

Essential Oils and Cooking

Because doTERRA essential oils are concentrated, they are actually 50 to 70 times more therapeutically potent than the herbs or plants that they are derived from. While dried herbs can lose up to 90% of their healing nutrients and oxygen molecules, essential oils do not. But the best part of cooking with doTERRA oils, is that they are 100% pure, therapeutic food grade Essential Oils that are freely available and safe for cooking and home use.

There are approximately 60 drops of essential oil per teaspoon and while this may not seem like alot, it is important to remember this example – just “one” drop of peppermint oil equals about 28 cups of peppermint tea.

Essential oils are naturally potent and powerful because they are highly concentrated and taken directly from natural sources. The purity and potency of essential oils make them perfect for adding flavor to any dish. Because essential oils are so powerful, it doesn’t take much to add an extra kick of flavor to your favorite entrees, beverages, meats, desserts, and more.

 

The Convenience of cooking with essential oils

Take a look at my favorite essential oil dropper HERE. If you are like me and always needing to save time, using essential oils in your cooking is a great way to save time. And the recipes that you can use essential oils for, are everywhere! While some of you may prefer to use raw or fresh ingredients to flavor food, these kinds of ingredients aren’t always on hand and available. Having essential oils on hand makes it easy when you don’t have time to run out to the store to buy fresh basil, or if you realize that you just used your last lemon. And sometimes, it can be difficult to find fresh ingredients throughout the entire year, as so many herbs, spices, and fruits are only available during certain seasons. In addition to providing a convenient way to season your food, essential oils can also be more cost-effective in the long run. Since it only takes a tiny amount of essential oil to add flavor to any dish, you will be saving money by not having to replace your herbs and spices as often. Because essential oils stay good for so long, you also don’t have to worry about fresh ingredients going bad if you don’t end up using them before their expiration date. While using fresh ingredients is a wonderful way to enhance your cooking, essential oils provide a much more convenient way to add flavor when you need it.

 

A Couple Simple Recipes

Ginger Pear Green Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 heaping cup fresh spinach
  • 1 heaping cup diced frozen pears (cut fresh pears and freeze for 1 hour)
  • ½ cup plain non-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or milk of choice
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 drop of Ginger essential oil

Directions

  • Put all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until creamy and smooth

 

Raspberry Limeade

Ingredients

Raspberry Puree

  • 2 cups raspberries
  • ½ cup sugar or honey
  • 1 cup water

Drink

  • Limes, Sparkling water, Ice, Lime essential oil

Directions

  • In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water, ½ cup sugar or honey, and 2 cups raspberries.
  • Cook until sugar has dissolved. Cool and strain.
  • To serve, add raspberry puree (around 2 tablespoons), ice, juice of one lime, and 1–2 drops Lime essential oil to a glass. Top with sparkling water.
  • Garnish with limes and raspberries. Enjoy!
