Copaiba vs CBD - what's the difference
doTERRA has an incredible new Copaiba oil, and I am completely in love with it. I have been using it daily to help with anxious feelings, to ease tension in my back and neck, and for help with calming, peacefulness and tranquility, during high stress times. And most importantly a drop every day for the positive brain impact it has!
But Copaiba isn't just about easing tension, even though Copaiba, can help soothe anxious feelings, but when taken internally, Copaiba supports a healthy immune and cardiovascular system as well.
The most important and impressive health benefits of copaiba oil will certainly include its ability to assist with relief of symptoms of pain and inflammation, and to help with relaxation, but Copaiba is also often used to help protect against infection, heal the skin, prevent fungal growth, and boost the respiratory health. It improves the health of the skin and hair, helps to maintain bladder control, speeds up the healing process, tightens the skin, and has the ability assist with the regulation of blood pressure.
Copaiba Essential Oil
Copaiba essential oil is an oil that is distilled from an oleoresin called copaiba. This resin is produced as a sap from a tree in tropical South America from the Copaifera genus. Although the resin itself can change its color depending on the ratio of resin to essential oil, once the oil is distilled out, it should be pale yellow in color with a slightly bitter taste and an aroma that is reminiscent of the balsam of the tree. Copaiba is considered to be one of the most anti-inflammatory substances on earth, yet much of the world only uses copaiba as a lacquer or varnish. However, in traditional medicine, this essential oil has been used extensively by indigenous people and is now spreading around in the world. Copaiba being derived from the resin of this copaiba tree, is simply amazing. This tree can grow upwards of more than 100 feet!
Copaiba oil is widely used in cosmetic products including soaps, creams, lotions, and perfumes. Since the 16th century, copaiba essential oil has been utilized in traditional health practices by the natives of north and northeastern Brazil. Similar to Black Pepper essential oil, Copaiba can help soothe anxious feelings and it can be applied to the skin to promote a clear, smooth complexion. Taken internally, Copaiba essential oil supports the health of the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and respiratory systems. Although Copaiba does not contain psychoactive cannabinoids, the main component caryophyllene may be neuroprotective and have cardiovascular and immune benefits as well. Copaiba is also a powerful antioxidant that promotes immune health.
The active components in copaiba essential oil are quite powerful, consisting mainly of terpenes, which are hydrocarbons that have significant effects on the functioning of our body. Fortunately for us, most of the side effects of the terpenes found in copaiba essential oil are very beneficial for our health. That being said, if you consume too much of this potent oil, it can cause stomach issues on par with food poisoning. Fortunately, allergies to this essential oil are rare, and it can be used both in topical applications and in a diffused state in aromatherapy.
Health Benefits Of Copaiba Essential Oil
From skin to the respiratory health, copaiba oil is used for many body functions. Let’s take a closer look at some of these valuable health benefits below.
One of the most notable and popular health benefits of copaiba essential oil is derived from its astringent property. Copaiba’s active components tighten the skin, which can help the skin look younger, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and even strengthen the skin to prevent lesions or wounds as the body ages.
Not only does it protect the skin and physically change it, copaiba essential oil also heals the skin and infuses the body with powerful nutrients and organic compounds that can eliminate the appearance of blisters, marks, and blemishes. In fact, copaiba essential oil is often topically applied to scars in order to speed their healing and reduce their visibility.
Supports the respiratory system
In an aromatherapy context, copaiba essential oil is often turned to by people suffering from some sort of congestive problems or respiratory issues. When inhaled, the soothing nature of the copaiba essential oil, which is famed as an anti-inflammatory substance, can ease any discomfort and loosen the tensed muscles and glands that might be causing the irritation in the respiratory system.
Assists with reducing symptoms of pain
This seems to be something that everyone looks for, but only a few people find. Copaiba essential oil is an analgesic and has been used in this capacity for generations. Whether in an aromatherapeutic context or when topically applied, the oil can help to reduce symptoms of pain and loosen muscles, and even helps with the reduction of discomfort of head tension.
Helps with the elimination of Infection
The strong antibacterial nature of copaiba essential oil can act as a major booster for your immune system. It can act as a shield for your skin, protecting any wounds from developing an infection. It also protects you internally by eliminating harmful bacteria and microorganisms that may be negatively affecting you from inside.
Supports the Mood
As an element in aromatherapy, copaiba essential oil has often been used to lighten the spirit and improve mood. There aren’t many essential oils that have such a sweet, pleasant smell of rich honey, but the combination of the scent and its gentle effects on your hormonal balance can significantly improve your day. This is certainly one of my favorite properties of copaiba.
Diuretic in Nature
Copaiba essential oil can help to cleanse the body and detoxify the system by stimulating urination. As a diuretic substance, copaiba essential oil can help everything from incontinence to bedwetting when applied properly.
When it comes to fungal infections, there aren’t too many essential oils that can do the trick, but the unique terpene structures found in copaiba essential oil are very effective as antifungal agents. If you suffer from athlete’s foot or any sort of nail fungus, applying some copaiba essential oil should significantly speed up the healing process and protect you from future infections.
Supports the stabalization of Blood Pressure
For boosting your heart health and reducing your chances of experiencing a heart attack or a stroke, add some copaiba to your aromatherapy ritual or your essential oil regimen. The anti-inflammatory, soothing nature of copaiba essential oil can help with the tension and strain in your blood vessels, allowing blood pressure to drop and the strain to disappear from your cardiovascular system. This helps to prevent some of the leading causes of stroke and coronary heart disease.

Copaiba vs CBD oil? What's the difference
The Blood Brain Barrier
Because of my brain tumor history I'm all about oils that support our brain. It's a bit more rare to find an oil that has the ability to pass the Blood Brain Barrier which in turn positively affects the brain. Not all oils are high in sesquiterpenes and can cross the BBB. Copaiba is high in sesquiterpenes and oils that are high in sesquiterpenes have the ability to cross the BBB.
"Copaiba is 70-90% sesquiterpenes which cross the blood brain barrier (increases the oxygen into the cells). With the high levels of beta caryophellene, gamma elemene, and alpha humalene, it was used in the past to aid the natural processes of redness and irritation of body tissue…"
*Frankincense oil is 8% sesquiterpenes
The 3 Types of Cannabinoids
Copaiba is being called "the new CBD oil" in the essential oil world. And for good reason! Because of it's chemical compounds it positively affects the brain, the entire neurological system and all connecting body systems. There are 3 different types of Cannabinoids and doTERRA Copaiba essential oil is very (very!) high in the BCP type.
Medical Marijuana (commonly called CBD) is growing in popularity because of it's plant based ability to positively affect the entire body. But the compound in CBD oil that has the ka-pow properties is the THC, the part of CBD that makes it illegal in many states in the US. But THC is illegal in many states. And THC has these negative side effects
- 'drugged' physical appearance
- dry mouth
- red eyes
- excessive hunger
So while I love the idea of a plant based medicine, for these side effects of THC I would suggest against it and instead looking at the natural alternative - Copaiba Essential Oil.
CBD is naturally found in hemp and in cannabis (or called marijunana). The concentration of hemp CBD is low (about 1-3%, and if from marijuana it is higher and up to about 35% CBD. CBD is believed to help with pain, cancers, seizures, brain issues, anxiety, and many other health concerns. So this plant is definitely amazing!
BCP is a a type of cannaboid that is predominetly in Copaiba Essential Oil. Now here's the best part -- BCP is over 60% in doTERRA's Copaiba! That's 2-30x more predomienet that CBD or THC. And side note too: it's much, much cheaper than CBD or THC. It doesn't have the negative effects of THC and it's legal in all 50% states. Win-win-win!
So Why is Copaiba Essential Oil the New Alternative?
- 2-30x more cannaboids in BCP than in THC or CBD
- legal in all 50 states - no impact on drug screening tests
- does not have negative effects on the body
- costs less than 1/6 of CBD or THC
How to Use Copaiba
Chances are you've heard some amazing stories about CBD oil. And you've thought about getting a medical marijuana card and trying it. But a more natural alternative to this already amazing plant is Copaiba. Here are my suggested ways on how to use it to get the most amazing results!
- 1 drop under the tongue am or pm (quickly enters the blood stream)
- mix 30 drop Copaiba in a 10ml roller bottle. Roll on the bottoms of feet 2x a day
- Have a specific area you need to target? Apply 2 drops topically to that area, 2x a day
- Apply 2 drops to the entire spine (tail bone to back of head) daily
- Diffuse Copaiba when you're feeling stressed or anxious
Are you ready incorporate this amazing oil into your daily regime?
