This lemon-like essential oil has many uses, including uplifting of the mood, surface cleansing properties, and benefits to help with the beautifying of the skin, mainly due to its similarities with many of our other citrus essential oils. When diffused, Litsea essential oil can have strong rejuvenating effects, bringing a fresh energy to your day! It’s clean, sweet, fresh scent is uplifting and helps clear your mind and rejuvenate your energy.

Litsea and our Mood

Litsea cubeba is an evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family. Litsea Cubeba produces a small, pepper-like fruit, beautiful leaves and flowers, along with established roots.  The small fruit is the main source of the essential oil of the plant. This pepper-like fruit produces Litsea, which is the lemon-like essential oil with a wide range of aromatic uses, but mainly known for the effect that it can have on our mood. Used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine, Litsea essential oil is widely known for its ability to uplift and positively affect our mood.

Antibacterial Properties

Being native to East Asia, Litsea has a long history of traditional use by the indigenous people of Taiwan and has been widely distributed in Japan, Taiwan, Southern China, and Southeastern Asia, especially for its antibacterial properties. One of the main components of Litsea essential oil is citral – which makes up roughly over 70% of the phytonutrient content of the oil. This gives Litsea oil it’s strong antibacterial and antiseptic qualities that make it a perfect oil for application to an external or internal infection. Litsea oil has massive properties as a natural agent not only for its use in aromatherapy and uplifting our mood, but also widely used in natural medicine, as a micro-bacterial agent.

If you are looking to use an essential oil, to apply to an internal infection or an external infection, Litsea is the perfect essential oil to have on hand.  It’s antibacterial properties make it extremely effective in regards to external infections that occur on or around an open wound, as well as fungal issues like athlete’s foot.

Cleansing Properties

Due to its high content of geranial and neral, Litsea has many surface cleansing properties. Geranial and neral are also found in Melissa and Lemongrass and have very similar scents and properties. When diffused, Litsea can promote feelings of fresh energy to your day.

Primary Benefits

  • Diffuse for a refreshing and uplifting aroma
  • Add to your homemade surface cleanser for an antibacterial fresh aroma
  • Use in aromatherapy and meditation for balance and inspiration
  • Diffuse while working or exercising to bring fresh energy and stimulation
  • Use to manage symptoms of indigestion and flatulence.

Litsea Aroma

Litsea Cubeba oil has a smell that is clean, fresh and sweet, and also very citrusy, quite similar to Wild Orange and Lemon, with a hint of a spicy, almost cinnamon-like, smell. I have read that the taste is quite similar, and can be blended easily with a variety of other herbs or spices for culinary purposes, or essential oils such as lemon, orange, sandalwood or cedarwood.
